"Kerpiç Evler" / Traditional Cypriot Architecture:
The general identity of Cyprus of it being the third largest island, located in the Mediterranean Basin.
However, Cyprus bears a paradoxical combination as being a small island and having a diverse local change in it. Likewise, the rest of the Mediterranean environments, local influences are vital in the development of vernacular architecture on the island.
On one hand, the dominant influences of the prevailing unfamiliar cultures on the formal architecture in terms of administrative, religious and public buildings and as a consequence, relatively influenced residential architecture of the urban settlements.
On the other hand, organic, pragmatice and utilitarian developments of rural vernacular architecture, which remained distant from the prevailing cultural influences, express another important veracity in the traditional build environment on the island.
In brief, the vernacular architecture of the island is primarily developed in two fields in terms of urban and rural vernacular. Although geographical, topographical, climatic parameters and abundances of building materials generally denote the similar characteristics, particular differences are clearly observed in the building activity of both two fields.
Prof. Dr, Ozfur Dincyurek has identified the rural vernacular house type of the island is primarily into three groups.
