Christmas Cypriot Folk Art and the Nativity of Christ

The image depicts the Nativity of Christ and additional episodes around it: the baby bath, Joseph's conversation with an old shepherd, the journey of the three Magi to the cave and the dance of the angels praising. The whole picture is characterized by a miniature mood in rendering every detail. The image of the Leventis Gallery, created during the period of Venetian rule (1489-1571), maintains an eclectic attitude towards the adoption of Western art.

The two festive stamps show the rich folk art of our island. They reflect our history and the social and artistic development, customs and traditions of our country. The Cypriot Folk Art of embroidery and basket weaving is presented through the Christmas ornaments. The stamp of €0.34 shows the tsestos (a type of basket) and the stamp of €0.41, the Lefkaritika (embroidery art).
